So finally the season has arrived with the anticipation of title challengers only enforced with a 100% pre-season record (7 wins out of 7) But nothing is ever plain sailing with Broughton - as 1st Team Manager Jon Livesey had to pull out of the full time roll (even later than Tony Pulis) leaving today’s match in the hands of Neil Eccles. Anyway a strong squad arrived a Ribbleton Park still in good spirits and that continued onto the pitch, all be it a very small one! We definitely started the brighter of two sides, the back 3/5 were rarely troubled and going forward we looked dangerous, eventually our good work paid off when a long throw in from Pendlebury was met by an unmarked Eccles in the box to head us into the lead. To be fair I can’t really point the finger at anyone else but if I’d have brought my shooting boots we’d have been 3 or 4 nil up inside 20 minutes. Wilbraham did have the better of us in the later stages of the first half, Aidy, Gilly and Al Butler proved to be a solid unit but without Greg pulling off some great saves the lead wouldn’t have lasted very long. In the final minutes of the first half a great in swinging corner from Butterworth caused all sorts of problems in their six yard box, lucky for us Pendlebury reacted quickest to knock the ball home giving us a 2-0 lead at the break. Into the second half we went, with a plan to keep it tight which didn’t really happen, 5 minutes in and Wilbraham had a goal back, sloppy from our part but we didn’t crumble, a little re-shuffle to 4-4-2 and from then on we controlled the game. Cummins and Butler, now the centre mid two, battled hard not giving anything away and the introduction of Mottley and Goshey made us stronger going forward. With 10 mins to go a bursting run from Pendlebury ended with about 3 opposing players hacking him down, from 20 yards goal machine JM made the result safe with a great finish. All in all a great start to the season, Wilbraham were a decent outfit, but we were better with standout performances all over the park. We go again Tuesday!! MOM Mark Pendlebury!! - NE

Springfields (a)   3 - 0   (ht.1-0)
scorers :  N. Eccles, A. Buterworth, Wielgosz
It’s been quite some time – almost five months in fact – since Broughton Amateurs 1st team lost a football match. And after another comfortable victory on Tuesday night, it’s going to be a while longer before the boys are subjected to the nasty, almost forgotten taste of defeat. The most recent team to try their luck against the Mid Lancashire Football League’s answer to The Invincibles’ were Springfields. And for about half an hour, they held their own. Broughton, playing in a 3-5-2 formation, struggled to utilise the pace and guile of A. Horn and Butterworth on the flanks. With the centre of the pitch congested and the Springfields midfield putting in a combative shift, the first half hour was a largely scrappy affair. On a couple of occasions, Wielgosz, playing just behind the strikers, almost played in Eccles and Mottley with cute through-balls, but those, along with a pinball moment in the box following a corner, were about as close as the reds came to breaking the deadlock. It has to be said, though, that for all the opposition’s battling – and fouling – they didn’t come close to troubling Broughton’s sturdy backline of McGill, Owens and R. Horn. The breakthrough eventually arrived on around 35 minutes. Decent work on the right by A. Horn, Eccles and Wielgosz ended with the ball being laid back to Barnes just outside the penalty area. Composing himself, he lofted a ball towards the back post, and after grazing the thinning crown of Mottley, it was met by the even shinier head of Butterworth and bounced into the far corner of the goal. The only other noteworthy incidents in what was a relatively dull 1st half were a couple of disgraceful tackles, one of which left Mottley limping like a pimp. The first 10 minutes of the 2nd half were going to be pivotal. Thankfully, things played into Broughton's hands. With the large pitch taking its toll on the Springfields players’ legs, the second period was much more open, right from the whistle. Five minutes in, Mottley – reminiscent of a lame racehorse – hobbled off to be replaced by Titley, who took his place in the centre of midfield, with Wielgosz joining Eccles in attack. Within minutes, Cummins, Barnes and Titley were bossing the midfield, feeding the relentlessly energetic Butterworth, who repeatedly left his marker and a couple of others for dead, before delivering a pinpoint cross. A period of sustained pressure resulted in a string of corners executed brilliantly by Butterworth and Wielgosz, but we failed to take advantage. Eventually, however, a fantastic freekick, whipped in by Butterworth from a deep position on the right landed at the feet of Wielgosz, whose connection at the back post was blocked on the line. Luckily, though, Eccles was lurking to smash the ball home from a couple of yards out. Springfields rallied, and a few minutes later, a freekick midway inside the Broughton half was clipped over Owens and collected by a forward who played it across goal for a teammate to score. Cue squeaky bum time? Not when honest Doug Birch is running the line. His flag, raised to indicate offside as soon as the first ball was collected, hadn’t been noticed by any of the Springfields lads, and after a quick chat between the referee and his assistant, their celebrations turned to dismay. Still 2-0. It proved to be a big moment, too. Shortly after, the consensus on the touchline was that Springfields had “gone”. Broughton began to open up opposition at will, and if Eccles, Cummins and a couple of others had been more composed in front of goal, the scoreline could have been a lot more embarrassing for Springfields. Broughton did manage to bag one more, though, when the impressive Butterworth weaved his way inside and shanked a right-footed pass, which bent around a centre back and into the path of Wielgosz, who calmly rounded the keeper before jogging the ball into an empty net - after a couple of the slowest stepovers you’re ever likely to see. Cummins had a chance to stake an early claim for goal of the season, when some impressive interplay with Barnes and Titley ended with the floppy-fringed playmaker, around 30 yards from goal, chipping the ball over the left-back’s head and into the path of the marauding A. Horn, who delivered an inch perfect cross to the back post. Having ghosted into the box unmarked, Cummins controlled the ball neatly before flicking it over the head of a defender. Then, from eight yards out, he smashed the ball over the crossbar and onto the railway lines. Apparently, he was put off by an over-exuberant shout from TItley. While Broughton’s performance was far from vintage, the team once again showed a devastating combination of ruthless efficiency, solidity, professionalism and superior fitness levels. Man of the Match was Butterworth, who scored one, set-up two and made Forrest Gump look like John Terry. Whisper it quietly, but this team might just do something…. JL

Southport Trinity Res  (h)  3 - 2  (ht.0-2)
scorers :  N. Eccles 2, S. Horn
Doug Birch back as manager and a strong team on the field even though we had something like 7 players missing for various reasons. Jon, in last weeks literary masterpiece said something like "whisper it quietly - we might just do something". Well for the 1st 30 minutes of todays game it really did look like he had tempted fate. Starting 3-5-2 we failed to get any grip on midfield and as a consequence got overrun by runners from the middle coming through onto our back line. The jitters that this caused meant we failed to get our wide guys forward and so the forwards were constantly under pressure and gave it away too easily. Generally - as you can tell - it wasn’t a pretty picture. We did have some moments, mainly from corners, but despite our efforts we got nowhere. Having conceded 2 goals in quick succession we did stabilise things a bit, but 2-0 down at half time required some action. 4-4-2, that old standby, proved our salvation. Suddenly, we had an extra man it midfield. The back 4 had to mark man to man - but you are good players - you can do that. Stu Horn, pushed out to full back forged a dynamic partnership with Butterworth and we started to threaten. Luke, Butler and Barnes suddenly were all over their midfield foes and Southport hardly got a look in during all the 2nd half. Eccles began the revival with a quick reaction to a loose ball and 10 minutes later Butterworth and Horn combined well and as Horn drove into the box he was upended. Horn finished the job and we were level. Ash in our goal was now, by and large, a spectator and as we got a tighter control the quality of football continued to improve. Cummins and Pomfret joined the fray and fitted in seamlessly. Heywood began to show his ability as the jet lag wore off and it was now surely a question of when rather than whether. The winner came through a great counter attack starting from a Southport corner. Owens (i think ) headed well clear, the ball dropped to Carl Butler 10 yards inside our half, and Butler swivled and hit a superb 30m volley/pass into the path of Eccles rampaging forward. Eccles in turn took the ball in his stride at full pelt and hammered the ball into the bottom corner. Maybe Jon is right after all. db

Goosnargh  (a)  3 - 1  (ht.1-0)
scorers :  R. Horn, A. Butterworth, J. Yates
Broughton continued their 100% start to the season with a scoreline that doesn't really indicate their dominance in this one-sided game. With everyone else away, it was left to the player-management team of Horn and Alston to run the team this week, and the job was made much easier with the fact that we had only 11 players, with Matt Ryan being drafted in at the last minute to give us a (in his own words) 'Kevin Davies option' from the bench. After warming up on the wrong pitch, the team lined up in a 4-4-2 formation and began to dominate from the start. Although we were far from our best, the team looked incredibly dangerous in the first few minutes, with Heywood and Yates troubling an ageing defence (featuring a familiar shiny head) with clever movement and quick passing. It was through this route that we took the lead. Heywood was left with space to turn and he threaded in Yates, who calmly slotted the ball past the onrushing 'keeper. It seemed we would then go on to score four or five, but we failed to settle into our short passing style and appeared too hasty to play the killer pass. However, with Goosnargh failing to trouble new recruit Jack Ward with the defence expertly marshalled by Horn and Monks, we still managed to create quite a few clear chances. We forced numerous corners, which were expertly delivered from the corner takers, with Rob Horn having one cleared off the line from a pinpoint delivery. Butterworth's energy caused their defence to drop deeper, and this allowed our midfield to start to get on the ball. Yates, Heywood and Butterworth linked up well on a few occasions, but they decided to play keep-ball in the six yard box instead of shooting, so the lead remained a fragile 1-0 going into half time.
With Matt Ryan replacing the classy Alston at half time, Heywood dropped into midfield with Titley, who had started to pick his passes just before the break. After wise words from coach Horn about being quicker in our 'transitions', we continued our domination of the game. Again, we kept creating chances, and, again, we kept missing them, so it was left to our centre halves to show the front line how's it done. Matt Ryan was put through on goal, and his lightning turn of pace caused the familiar Goosnargh centreback to use his experience to take him down. From the resulting freekick, Butterworth did not overhit the freekick and picked out the unmarked Monks at the far post who headed the ball back across the goal to his PiC Rob Horn, and he coolly headed it into the gaping net. After this, Goosnargh's heads dropped and we soon added another. Stu Horn fed the ball into 'barn door' Yates and his lobbed pass put through Butterworth, who raced through and calmly used the outside of his left wand to put the ball into the corner of the net. After that, the game passed without incident for the final 15 minutes, until Hothead Heywood raked his studs along the back of their centre midfielder. There was squaring up and a few cross words but with a humble apology from Heywood, the game was allowed to continue. The game petered out, and Ward was heading for a clean sheet before a lack of pressure saw their centre forward cheekily chip our 'keeper from 20 yards. MoM was Rob Horn with Andy 'Gary Neville' Horn also getting a mention. Overall, we dominated the game, but we still are not firing on all cylinders. I think the best is yet to come. RA

Burscough Bridge (h)  3 - 0  (ht.1-0)
scorers :  A. Butterworth, G. Heywood, J. Yates
On a perfect day for good football we never looked likely to lose this game, but for a while seemed strangely reluctant to win it. The defence looked solid all game and restricted Burscough to a number of fairly long range efforts. Rob Horn in particular was the rock on which Burscough foundered, though the other members of the Horn clan plus Monks initially, and then McGill later, looked calm thoughout. This calm approach also extended to a pro active approach to attacking, many of our best moves started from a number of simple passes along the back line. Burscough's lone, dangerous, front man expended so much energy chasing from side to side that he ceased to exist as a threat after the 1st hour. Where we tended to break down was in midfield. A tendency to have one pass too many allowed Burscough to squeeze up and the attacks too often broke down in the middle third. When we moved it forward quickly we looked much more dangerous. Heywood lashed a superb 25 m drive against the far post then, having squeezed through, his effort was well saved by the keeper. Jamie Yates continued to pose a threat with good movement, but failed to find enough composure when through on goal on a number of occassions. Eventually pressure did tell, and from a corner Yates headed back towards goal and Butterworth finished things off. We looked for a more direct approach in the 2nd half. Heywood and Yates both played more on the Burscough back line and as a result all their good work now took place around the box. Eventually Yates found space on the left, drove into the box and his cross ball was well finished by Guy Heywood. This was more like it. Pendlebury replaced Horn, then Alex (one ankle) Alston returned from the colonies to join brother Ryan in midfield. We speculated on how many time this season both Alstons would be fit at the same time. We asked Google, but the computer just laughed at the chances. For this game at least we benefited from the combination. Ryan continued to find space and his influence grew as the game progressed and Alex showcased the silky skills that constantly left desperate lunges in his wake. From one such combination the ball went from Lopko, through the defence to Alston, to Alston and finally to Yates who finally got a reward for his efforts on the day. A few positional changes saw Pendlebury to centre mid and Barnes to right back - and with this combination the last 15 minutes became an exhibition. db

  GUILDHALL CUP Round 1
Those who know Broughton will detect a strange mix of goalscorers - we scored 8, and 6 of them came from the back 4 ! It was the way it worked out on the day. Yates and Heywood up front combined well, but suffered from a mix of hasty finishing, good saves and poor luck but in general ran their defence ragged, but the chances fell elsewhere. We had a plan to start on a high tempo - and for once it worked. Heywood set the tone by harrying and dispossessing a defender immediately from the kick off and Yates shot just over. Similar work by Yates created a corner 1 minute later and this time Rob Horn was on hand to nod in his first. The pattern was set and high pressing and a series of class corners from Horn and Alston created a series of chances. The second was 100% quality. Al Butler broke up an attack and sent a 30 yard pass inside the right back. Butterworth outpaced his defender, took the ball on a further 10 yards then hammered the ball onto the bottom corner. Chances came and went, but finally Yates converted the hardest of his chances so far and we should have been away. No such luck. Sloppy play, brought on by our dominance, allowed a fast forward to outpace our last (and only) defender, round the keeper and create a large amount of frustration with Broughton management. Half time, direct orders about style of play given, off we go again. Now we moved the ball forward faster, the Clayton midfield and defence were stretched and after 20 mins were blowing out of their ar**s and we built a score. Stu Horn scored a great bending free kick then looked to score his first hatrick (for let's say a while). The pressure told and the usually reliable left foot shot was saved by the keeper, but followed up by Rob Horn for his second. 5 min later Cummins was dragged down and up stepped Rob Horn to score his first hatrick (for let's say a while). The pen was so poor it shocked the keeper into missing it. Monks completed the back 4 goal fest as he found time from a corner. Clayton play detriorated, as did their behaviour, and we were pleased to see the game finish. db

Eccleston & Heskin Res (h)  3 - 0 (ht.3-0)
scorers :  T. Barnes, A. Alston, J. Yates
A game of 2 proverbial halves in which we twinkled in the first half, but flickered for most of the second. The damage was done in the 1st half however as we controlled most of the first 45 mins and the 3-0 half time score was a true reflection of the balance of play. So who did what ? Well, the biggest threat continued to come from out wide as Butterworth powered past his opponents and Alex Alston tricked and jinked his way into the box on the right. Both avenues of attack, combined with a direct approach down the middle to Yates and Eccles saw the Eccleston defence fully stretched, and each in its turn paid dividends. The first goal came from quick reactions to a Yates free kick. The keeper spilled his save as the ball headed to the bottom corner - and Tom Barnes reacted quickest to volley the ball home. Alex Alston had been turning his full back inside out for most of the 1st half and the panic caused meant that they backed offalmost every time. After 30 mins Alston merely strode unmolested into some offered space and banged it in - simples. Shortly before half time a long ball over the top was seized on by Jamie Yates and finished with aplomb. The second half wasn’t as fluent. Eccleston upped their game, brought on subs, and whilst not really a major threat, certainly became more of a handful. We were hampered by an injury to Monks and a lack of fitness in Eccles and Cummins (both returning from recent absences) and when we needed some fresh legs our subs went missing (for reasons best known to themselves). However, we saw the game out, kept a clean sheet, threatened occasionally, worked hard and it became 6 out of 6. db .

New Longton Rovers (a) 0 - 0  (ht.0-0)
scorers :  -
New longton were our nemesis last season and it wasn't a whole lot better today either. We started with selection problems - we had too many - but despite this we looked to be lacking in motivation and generally sloppy in execution. The upside was that we didn’t look like conceding at any point in the game , but certainly for the 1st hour at least, we didn’t really look terribly threatening either. New longtons only chance in that time came from an enthusiastic back pass from McGill, though Lopko remained calm in the face of the high swirling ball that came his way.( Most of our support team were panicking ) Barnes and Sean Cummins worked hard in midfield and our defence looked calm under attack, but that’s probably about the extent of any "positives " A number of personnel and formation changes made about the hour mark had the desired effect and things started to happen- unfortunately without any end effect other than to cheer up the crowd. On another day we might have won by 3 clear goals, but todays efforts only lead to frustrated" what might have beens". Eccles headed over following a great run and cross by Butterworth. Butterworth the hit the post when it seemed easier to score, and this miss was followed by another by Eccles who shook the bar from 5 yards out. Next to miss was the usually reliable stu Horn - his penalty was well saved by the keeper. And so it went on until we gave up and accepted the inevitable- it just wasn’t our day. Still the sun was shining and nobody died. Next week we need to be better. db

  GUILDHALL CUP Round 2
Some may view this result as an upset. But only those who haven’t had the pleasure of watching Broughton play this season (last week’s anomaly aside) would be foolish enough to put it down to the ‘magic of the Guildhall Cup’. It was a well-deserved win, although in fairness, the first period was pretty cagey and evenly-matched. Eccleston & Heskin, boasting a few big, farmer types in their ranks, looked at our diminutive line-up and fancied their chances of bullying us. How wrong they were. A handful of meaty – and late – challenges in the opening stages failed to rattle us. And when pint-sized full-back Kev Cummins put in a tackle of gargantuan proportions, they knew they were in a game. The fact that their bespectacled manager was apoplectic on the touchline was a testament to our dominance. With R. Alston and Butler edging the midfield battle, R. Horn and Monks handling the lone frontman with relative ease, and Heywood and Yates looking dangerous, we were the better team. So it was no surprise when on the half hour mark, Yates ran on to an S. Horn pass and smashed the ball into the top corner. The linesman’s flag – which appeared to go up unnecessarily – put a swift end to our celebrations. It wasn't one-way traffic, though, and Eccleston & Heskin served a couple of warnings of their own. One long ball drew a soft free-kick on the edge of our box, while another resulted in a wild shot. Both came to nothing. The breakthrough eventually came five minutes before half-time, when Heywood pounced on a poor throw-in, nicking the ball and driving forward before firing into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. The second half started in the same way as the first, with both teams putting in plenty of big tackles. Butler, clearly envious of his midfield adversary’s flowing, blonde locks, threw in two crunchers, and his desire seemed to have a contagious effect. Monks probably showed a tad too much desire, though, and was lucky not to be sent off, when he bizarrely headbutted his marker’s upper thigh during one particularly homoerotic tussle. Thankfully, he went unpunished, and that gave his new best friend, Alex ‘one trick pony’ Alston, the platform to terrorise his marker. Sadly, Heywood, who was leading the line well, ‘felt’ his groin and had to be replaced – but not before he made another vital contribution. Receiving the ball in the centre circle, he spun away from a defender and showed good strength to ride two tackles before playing the ball wide to A. Alston. Chief Lonely Heart jinked his way forward, and when the ball ended up at the feet of their keeper, Yates was quick to close him down, forcing him into a botched clearance, which left the stopper in a heap on the ground and clutching his back. The ball only made it as far as A. Alston, who held his nerve to pick his spot. Unfortunately, his mind was still on the 18-year-old floozy he pulled in Evoque, and his shot hit the inside of the post and rolled out to the six-yard box, where Yates was lurking to smash it home. While Pendlebury replaced Heywood, the opposition left-back was forced to stand in for their stricken keeper. We smelled blood. Within a few minutes, Butler capped off a man-of-the-match performance, seizing a poor clearance and calmly slotting into an empty net from 25 yards. Game over and time for changes. A. Horn replaced S. Horn, while Barnes replaced R. Alston. But it was our other substitute, Pendlebury, who made the most significant impact, when he was hauled down for a penalty. With recent spot-kick fluffer S. Horn out of the equation, Monks began striding towards the spot, but Yates was having none of it and drilled the ball home to make it 4-0. With the result in the bag, the tempo dropped and we allowed Eccleston & Heskin a 10-minute spell. Monks – who had already claimed the ‘worst moment’ prize with his Glasgow kiss at groin height – submitted another contender for the honour when he conceded a penalty, which they scored. In short, we were solid, we worked hard, hunted in packs, played slick football and scored good goals on the way to beating a side who are challenging for the Premier Division title – and we weren’t at our best. League and cup double, anyone? - JL

Springfields (h)  2 - 1  (ht.1-1)
scorers :  S. Cummins, N. Eccles
After a Rolls Royce performance last week we stuttered like a Lada on 3 cylinders this week. Not sure why, we had a great team (5 good subs all keen to play), but maybe it was just a reaction to last weeks high. Either way, we started off slow and ragged and struggled to piece things together. Heywood after last weeks electric performance struggled to impose himself and eventually succumbed to a groin pull after only 10 mins. The introduction of Eccles did spark a bit more life into our attack (clearly the previous weekend hard stag - nighting fired up the soul) but sadly we were a goal down by that time and really were good value for that scoreline. From that low point however we did start to improve bit by bit and gradually we came into the game. Al Alston and Butterworth found space out wide and threatened, but equally suffered from the teams inability to find the final telling pass. Finally after 40 minutes we did find a second gear. Yates collected the ball on the right and drove at the Springy back 4. The ball broke to Butterworth and his drive was half stopped by the keeper, but finished off by Eccles. At least we could relax a bit and at least there was some inprovement in the 2nd half. Our back 4 of Kev Cummins , Rob Horn, Monks and Stu Horn were more or less solid and centre mid of Al Butler and Ryan Alston buzzed about but without excercising real control. The team should recognise the drive and motivation supplied by Stu Horn - at last we have an on field leader - and with his prompting we picked up the pace. Sean Cummins and Pendlebury joined the fray after 50 minutes and the chances started to come. And go. Your boys seemed to want to compete for worst or unluckiest miss of the game, but eventually we took the lead when Sean Cummins rounded at least 3 players then beat the keeper when one on one. The general support of the squad is now excellent - we now have more players than places - but all are prepared to attend and support. Also of note is the size of support base, now regularly in excess of 10 - and it does make a difference. db

Newman College (h)  1 - 0 (ht.0-0)
scorers :  M. McGill
Newman's manager was pretty fair minded, and his view was that we shaded it. That was actually a pretty fair summary of the overall game - as you would expect for a 1st v 2nd league encounter. The 1st half was well balanced, Newman started slightly better, but we came through more strongly as the half progressed. Sean Cummins and Al Butler were outstanding in midfield - often faced with 3 opponents, but the speed at which we moved the ball out wide was the key to the improvement. To start with it was slow, but as it speeded up so the improvement came, particularly on the left where Al Alston tormented the full back. We had 2 penalty shouts on the 30 minute mark. One was a good one - Al Alston being taken down and hurting himself badly in the process. The other, a fairly (lets say) creative effort to win a penalty. The dive was worthy of a Suarez, though the level of contact was - well …... The second half was equally tight, but much better from our perspective. The back four remained tight, Monks and Rob Horn, assisted by the Horn Bros at fullback snuffed out pretty much anything that came our way, and what little got passed them was safely collected by the safe hands of Greg Lopko. As the half progressed our level of pressure increased and the whole team gelled. Eccles level of energy unsettled the Newman defence and Pendlebury reminded us just what a good player he is when commited, rarely losing the ball when under pressure and always providing an out ball. Yates came on to continue the good work by Ryan Alston and McGill replaced Monks and, suitably loaded, the game moved into its final quarter. Who would prevail? Had the dice been cast ? Well happily yes. The last 25 minutes were our best. Sean Cummins went close when he latched onto Rob Horns header across the box, Kev Cummins was foiled by a last ditch tackle and both Eccles and Pendle were a nats away from converting a chance. However, cometh the hour, cometh the man. Mike McGill had fitted seamlessly into our back four, but it was at the other end that his moment of glory came. After a period of sustained pressure Stu Horn delivered a classic inswinging corner and Gilly escaped his marker and powered home a header. Cue delerium on the touchline but, we still had the last 10 mins to survive. Rob Horn suffered a neck problem that Doc Dennis (with his revolutionary novel treatment) sought to cure with Vicks nasal rub. It didn’t improve the neck, but he didnt half smell good. Shortly after Sean Cummins injured his groin. One wonders what Doc Dennis might have used to try to cure this particular ailment, but Sean seemed strangely reluctant to let him experiment. However, despite these final trials we stayed strong and victory was ours. db

Eccleston & Heskin Res (a)  4 - 1 (ht.2-0)

All the talk on Saturday was of El Clasico. But who needs Casillas when you’ve got Lopko, Iniesta when you’ve got Butterworth, or Ronaldo when you’ve got Pendlebury? Anybody with genuine knowledge of the beautiful game knew the only place to see a footballing masterclass was in leafy West Lancashire, where Eccleston and Heskin Reserves were entertaining Broughton Amateurs. And, as it happened, the away team had a slightly continental look about it, lining up in a 4-3-3 formation and boasting Zolotarczuk in its ranks for the first time this season. With a three-pronged attack of Pendlebury, Eccles and Yates, we had the perfect blend of pace, power and finishing prowess, so it was no surprise that every time we got the ball in the final third we looked like we were going to score. The E&H right back must still be having nightmares about our laissez faire frontman Pendlebury, who time after time trapped S. Horn’s looping punts into the channel before using his brawn to roll his young marker and sprint away in trademark burglar fashion. Despite Broughton’s lofty standing in the league, there were some nerves on the touchline, mainly from the crocked S. Cummins, who appears to have lost all control of his emotions since his engagement. Those nerves were exterminated with a quick swipe of Pendlebury’s right boot, though. Taking advantage of the first clear cut chance of the game, he controlled a loose, bouncing ball in the box, shrugged off a defender and coolly slotted into the bottom corner. And if Cummins had one or two butterflies left, Eccles took care of those. Butler drove into the box and, with the help of a ricochet, the ball landed at the feet of the shaven-headed striker who swept the ball into the top corner from a tight angle. A hint of offside? Perhaps, but who cares? If Eccles had shown the same level of composure when clean through a few minutes later, or Yates had been more ruthless when played in by Pendlebury, the game would have been out of sight, but when half-time came, the job was far from finished. The home team rallied, came out fighting and clawed one back, forcing Eccles to head into his own net while defending a corner. Cummins might have looked slightly nervous again, but this time it was Yates’ turn to set him at ease, rising highest to nod in a pinpoint S. Horn corner. Butterworth gave the scoreline a little more sheen when he volleyed home from long-range, and Yates claimed the right to buy this week’s lottery ticket when he hit the post from, literally, half a yard out. There might have been a bobble, but that didn’t stop us laughing. A professional performance, everybody played their part, but skipper S. Horn led by example and claims the man-of-the-match award.   "Goosnargh at home should be a formality,” uttered somebody who clearly knows nothing about football, after our last win. But it’s fair to say that 15 minutes into the game, that person, who will remain nameless, was beginning to think he might have tempted fate. The truth is that Goosnargh had one player, a centre forward, who could play a bit. They worked the ball to him a handful of times and, on each of those occasions, he showed pace and power. This season, our defence, without question, has been dominant, solid and watertight. But, at around 2.20pm on Saturday, our centre-half pairing of Monks and McGill was rattled. In fact, the team was rattled. For 20 minutes, we dived in, missed tackles, misplaced passes and failed to find the rhythm and fluency our fans have become accustomed to seeing. Thankfully for us, though, the Goosnargh centre halves have a combined age of at least 80 and turn as quickly as ferries. And totally against the run of play, we took advantage. A through-ball was played in the general vicinity of Yates and, showing raw pace reminiscent of a young Darren Huckerby, our jet-heeled striker left his markers eating dust as he raced away and prodded the ball past the onrushing keeper. Time to settle? Not quite. Within a minute or two, Goosnargh were back on level pegging. A scuffed shot from the edge of the box hit a couple of Broughton players, forcing Lopko into a late change of direction. He got to the ball, but couldn’t grasp it and it trickled wearily over the line near the foot of the post. Then, at last, the real Broughton appeared. We began to work harder, move the ball quicker and carve out chances. First, Eccles collected a through ball with a sublime first touch that put him in on goal, but his shot hit the post. Then, it was S. Cummins’ turn to be denied by the woodwork as he ghosted into the box and, at full stretch, met a cross with a firm header at the back stick. Again, his effort hit the post. The message at half-time: be patient and the goals will come. We were. They did. But not immediately. Five minutes into the second half, S. Cummins burst into the box and dropped a shoulder, sidestepping a defender, who scythed him down. Stonewall penalty. Unfortunately, Yates was desperate to join S. Horn’s club and blazed over in spectacular fashion, claiming the dishonour of worst moment for a second consecutive week. It was time to send for the cavalry. R. Horn replaced Monks, while Zolotarczuk came on for the injured Butler, giving us a welcome mix of solidity, creativity and hunger. On the hour mark, Zolotarczuk did his best Di Canio impression, volleying a scissor kick towards goal, or possibly the field behind the goal, and Eccles’ shaven head diverted it goalwards, sending it nestling into the back of the net, much to the relief of the home fans. With the game growing increasingly open and the opposition tiring, we took full advantage. Yates, after hitting the post from inside the box, picked up the ball 20 yards out and curled a shot over the goalkeeper and into the net, via the underside of the crossbar. And if the points weren’t already secure, Eccles ran on to a pass inside the box and poked the ball under the keeper. There was still time for the final Broughton substitute, Barnes, to sting the keeper’s hands with a 25 yard raspser, but the score remained 4-1. A. Horn was named the man of the match thanks to a characteristically no-nonsense performance at right-back. Next up, it’s New Longton at home. A formality if ever there was one, surely? JL

The wagon rolls on unhindered, but frankly only with a score of 6/10 for star quality. The effort score was higher, but we only hit the fluency heights in short bursts. Most of the best bits came early and as Zolotarczuk controlled midfield with Cummins and Butterworth, the front lads found the time and space to threaten. Eccles got us off to a good start when after a fine, fast break, his goal bound shot took a slight deflection and we were ahead. Rob Horn extended the lead, and his prolific goal scoring spree, when he met one of Stu Horns classic in swinging corners, and to complete a hot 15 minutes Jamie Yates showed a cool head to finish a one on one with the keeper. We could have extended the lead even further, but we couldnt quite apply the required finish when presented with opportunity. One would have thought that it would be a formality from there in, but New Longton came into the game as our shape started to buckle and the end of the half was more about cool defending than exciting attacking. The 2nd half started in a similar fashion so a change of formation - to 4-4-2 - and personnel, Ryan Alston for Zolly and Kev Cummins for Yates, was made, and this at least settled the game down. New Longton did get a goal back (and deserved it) when Greg Lopko in goals made a very rare handling error, but never looked likely to get more and we finally put the game to bed when Broughton's answer to Suarez turned in the box, evaded a tackle and lashed the ball home. Horns the name, Rob Horn. His reward was to be hauled off and Pete Monks combined with Gilly to see out the game safely. db

When you walk out on to the pitch on a mild November afternoon and two of the opposition players are wearing gloves, something becomes immediately clear: they don’t fancy it. And they really, really didn’t. In the first five minutes we were a bit sloppy, misplacing passes and shanking clearances as we got to grips with the bobbly surface. After that, though, it was men against boys. Ten minutes or so in, the returning Heywood combined with Yates who collected a pass in the inside right channel before tucking the ball in the far bottom corner. Moments later, the Southport keeper, who was at least an inch taller than Verne Troyer, played a short goal kick to a centre half, who was swiftly robbed by Yates, looking increasingly like a white Patrick Agyemang, he challenged the keeper and came out strongest, tapping gratefully into an empty net. Considering S. Horn had delivered a string of pinpoint, dangerous corners, you couldn’t blame him for fancying his chances when we were awarded a free-kick just outside the box. It was a surprise, then, that his wayward effort required a heavy deflection to take it past Willow in the Southport goal. Apparently, he’s claiming it. The only other noteworthy incident in the first half was a Paulo Wanchope-esque mazy run by Zolotarczuk, which ended with the casual midfielder having his wedding tackle fumbled. The resulting yelp, quite rightly, earned him the ‘worst moment’ award. Shortly after the second half got under way, it was R. Horn’s turn to continue his terrific run of form in front of goal. Another corner from Broughton’s answer to Andy Hinchcliffe caused panic in the box and the burly centre-half forced the bouncing ball over the line with his head. Earlier that morning, S. Cummins promised a certain co-gaffer that he was going to “score a volley” – and he very nearly delivered on those words. Yates got to the byline and cut the ball back to the all-action midfielder. His initial effort, a volley, was well-saved, but the pint-sized keeper couldn’t do anything to stop his follow-up header. It must have been at least five minutes since we last scored in the second half, so it was time for our fox-in-the-box, R. Horn, to give us something to cheer about again. Another corner to the back stick from, you guessed it, Broughton’s Tony Dorigo, was met by the defender who powered in a header, unmarked. Minutes later, Heywood got his reward for a top notch all-round performance when he finished confidently when through one-on-one. He then turned provider, curling a cross to the back post where substitute Eccles was waiting to nod home. Were we great or were they just awful? Probably a bit of both, but who cares? Our stand-in keeper, Monks, touched the ball twice – that tells you all you need to know. It was a fantastic team performance, typified by man-of-the-match S. Cummins, who bossed his marker from start to finish. To cap it all off, our nearest rivals, RIbble Wanderers, got beat and we celebrated in style in the VIP setting of Fulwood Lawn Tennis Club, where there was plenty of drunken chatter about a league and cup double.   The general feeling was that we needed a hard game to prove our worth - last weeks 8-0 scoreline being something of a jolly jaunt rather than a proper football match. Well we got it, though the squeaky bum finish was more of our own doing than anything else. Having started with a squad of 18 on Friday, we still had 15 ready to take the field on a murky afternoon at Myerscough. We started slowly, the opposition clearly being "up for it" as we can expect most teams to be from now till the season end. Walton moved the ball quickly from centre to the spaces behind our full backs - and unusually we looked vulnerable in those positions for the first quarter. We nearly went behind from such a move when a fine ball behind our right back exposed the defence. Al Alston recovered the position , but then under hit a back pass and it looked like we would be behind as the attacker rounded Lopko in goals - cue Monks to make a thrilling goalline clearance. 5 mins later Al Alston made ample amends when he too cleared off the line - and as you can tell we were shaky. Slowly, however, midfield started to get a grip and suddenly with Alston and Butterworth out wide the attacking threat swung in our favour. Alston continully turned the defence inside out and prompted by Heywood, Butterworth put over a series of dangerous crosses- all with no end product. In the end Neil Eccles put us ahead by doing what he does best- stretching the defence at speed and finishing with power. 10 minutes later, at the end of a spell of controlled pressure a Walton defender inexplicably headed past his own keeper and the lead was doubled. The game started to get tasty after series of meaty tackles lead to some serious anger management issues on the far touchline and we knew that the second half would start off at a high tempo. It did, but we coped well right up to the 55th minute when in a bizarre sequence of play we managed to engineer an own goal despite being under little real pressure and having had 5 minutes to clear the ball downfield. Think of Nevilles own goal for England and you have the half of it. It would have been easy for heads to go down, but Sean Cummins and Zolly (who had easily his best and most dynamic performance for Broughton) brought us back into the game. Butler and Alston R joined the fray and solidified things but it was Eccles who constantly posed a threat and eventually got a deserved reward and lashed the ball home. The final act was again self engineered as a wild clearance looped high in the sky and dropped under our own crossbar. Walton as a team were on average much bigger than your heroes and as (bad) luck would have it, 2 or 3 of them were there when the ball eventually came back to earth and they bundled the ball home. 1 minute to go and we saw it out . A battle won. db

OMG. Where does the novice sports hack start with this one. The momentum of the game was almost as erratic as the weather and almost mirrored the level of clemency as both swung violently between glorious sunshine and miserable hailstones. The sun was actually and metaphorically shining at the start as your boys started firmly on the front foot and with Jamie Yates in particular on fire. The game was barely 1 minute old before Rob Horn launched a mighty clearance in the direction of the Broughton front man - and Yates did the rest as he outpaced 2 defenders and planted the ball firmly in the corner of the net. 10 minutes later and the ball was back in the same spot, again despatched by Yates following a similar dynamics burst of pace. The confidence levels by this point were high - and as it transpired over confident - because we barely had a positive touch for the next 25 minutes. Bolton started to play the ball with confidence around midfield and with a move that started with careless defending and another that swung from one side to the other, coupled with 2 good finshes, we found ourselves back at level pegging. By this time we had already changed formation to match Bolton numerically in midfeld, but finally with 10 minutes of the half left we actually began to get closer to the opposition and again the momentum swung back. Rob Horn gave us the perfect end to the half as he met a classic Stu Horn inswinging corner with a classic power header into the top corner and on a positive note we had time to think. The midfield 3 needed to keep a tight hold on their dangerous opposition and with Al Butler in dynamic form no Bolton player was safe for the next 45 minutes. As result we had time to play and we soon discovered that Boltons defence was their achiles heel. Al Butler extended the lead to 2 when a mazy run from Zolly fed him a pefect pass on the edge of the box. A look up and a measured drive into the top corner was a just reward for his efforts so far. Bolton didn’t give up however and clawed a goal back - only for Butler to slam home an even better shot to again extend the lead.(Are you keeping up ? The score is now 5-3) By now Broughton were playing decent football and Heywood, Ryan Alston and Yates went close and maybe could have done better. If they had, the stress level of Management and support would have been kept a lot lower - especially when Bolton again closed the gap with 10 mins to go. However, we havent gone this long without losing (currently unbeaten for 24 games) with getting a feel for how to win games. The nerves were finally settled when AL Alston weaved some magic and Kev Cummins applied a finishing touch. Phew. Merry Xmas everybody. db

After a prolonged winter break, a tough friendly to get us back in the groove seemed a worthwhile exercise. Walmer Bridge, a team from the top division, seemed to fit the bill. With 17 fit chaps, all raring to go we agreed a unique format of 3 * 30 minutes and rolling subs to accommodate the number of personnel. All the combinations worked well, though a 3-0 lead after the first period effectively sealed the game. Guy Heywood obviously benefited from the break, was on top form from the off and claimed the first goal from a good turn and a cool finish. Not much later he managed to deposit a ball on St Vincents road, a remarkable feat considering he was only 5 feet out, but by this time Rob Horn had doubled the lead (a back post header) and Jamie Yates added another when he again evaded the Walmer defence. Midfield of Butler and Sean Cummins were well on top for the whole first hour and though Walmer did get a goal back (our only bit of slack play), the balance of play was clearly in Broughton's favour. Kev Cummins pressurised The Walmer defence for the whole of this period and got a reward when he got on the end of a pinpoint cross pass from Butterworth. Shortly after Butler was fouled in the box and Sean Cummins grabbed the ball with a view to increasing his seasons goal tally. The "belt it down the middle and give the keeper the eyes" routine went badly wrong when the keeper forgot to move, however the ball rebounded off his knee and Cummins knocked in the re-bound. By next week it will have turned into a clean strike into the bottom corner. The final period was a little disjointed to start with, too many changes perhaps, but eventually we got it together and started to play well again and a worthwhile exercise was enjoyed by all. db

Wilbraham (h)  4 - 0   (ht.3-0)
scorers :  J. Yates 2, G. Heywood, S. Cummins
What with the inclement weather, this game was transferred to the 4g pitch - a surface that has traditionally favoured your heroes, but would it today? Well yes, but it took a while to get going. The first 10 minutes were close, Wilbraham have been on a good run of late, but that 10 mins were the nearest they came to competing. After that we started to build up a head of steam and by the middle of the 1st half we had hit a purple patch - as purple as its been all season to date. Key to it were Cummins and Butler in centre mid, but their job was made easy by the movement and control of the whole team. Heywood was in sparkling form with some brilliant turns and lay offs. Kev Cummins was the chief beneficiary with some flowing moves down the left, sometimes ending with a close shot - and sometimes with a scream - as Wilbraham started to lose their cool and the fouls started to flow. Yates and Heywood both went close - and Butler and Yates went nowhere near - before we took the lead in classic style. Butler broke through behind the opposition defence and his cross was met by midfield partner Sean Cummins to hit it on the half volley into the bottom corner. This prefaced a mad 10 minutes in which Heywood capped a great first half performance by dancing round 2 men and hammering the ball past the keeper. 2 minutes later following a heavy challenge Andy Horn got in a tussle and was the recipient of a kick whilst prostrate. Exit One Wilbraham man after a red card. It didn’t go down to well with the away crowd and it took a while to settle down, but as soon as it did, and from the free kick, Yates broke into the box and was levelled by the defender. Somehow the defender stayed on the pitch and Yates finished the job to put us 3 goals to the good. The second half started exactly as we hoped. After only 5 minutes Yates reacted like lightening to a defensive mistake - and we were 4 up and the game was effectively over. Monks replaced Horn (who had been running around seemingly holding an imaginary handbag after the first half clash) and Butterworth replaced Heywood in an attempt to maintain the momentum. Cummins S found time to berate management (and most everybody else) as a result of some unsanctioned positional changes. Actually he was right, but it was still quite amusing, and after we got things sorted out we started to play again. Butterworth looked the most dangerous - jinking past his markers and denied by a very competent keeper. One step closer. db

Ribble Wanderers (a)  4 - 1   (ht.1-0)

Well this is another step forward in the quest for glory. Not a definitive step, but a bloody good way forward. The game started at a high tempo, with both teams providing worthy opponents, but it was clear that Broughton had a clear edge in quality and so it was simply a case of matching the commitment and being patient. Key to it was midfield where Cummins and Butler were immense, but to be fair everybody else was semi immense or better and so it looked only a question of time before success came. The first break through came after 25 minutes when a flowing move found Butterworth out wide on the right. A quick turn and a driven cross found Kevin Cummins steaming in at the back post and Broughton 20 dedicated fans had a something concrete to celebrate. The game was stopped for an injury break soon after after Rob "iron jaw " Horn somehow managed to inflict a cut head on the Ribble forward with his chin. Horn was unhurt apart from slightly bent stubble, but the Ribble lad went off for 5 minutes and then re-appeared with a bandage type affair on his head that made him look remarkably like John Cleese after his accident with the moose in Fawlty Towers. He had a similar temper to complete the comparison. The half ended with a couple of narrow misses from Yates and Butterworth, and with the prospect of the wind in our back for the 2nd half we adjourned for a think and words of managerial wisdom!! The 2nd half started well for us and especially for Butterworth. From the kick off Yates and Heywood pressed hard and as a team Ribble were forced back. A half hit clearance from the keeper fell to Butterworth 30 yards out and the ball was taken infield then lashed back into the top corner for a super goal. Cue delerium on the field and nice warm feeling in the managerial breast. This was rudely interupted 10 minutes later when in our only sloppy period of play we lost the ball in midfield, somehow got outflanked in defence and the ribble forward, with headwear bobbing in the wind, managed to connect at the back post. Stung by this setback our standards rose again and only 5 mins later Butler won the ball in midfield (again) and freed Heywood to close in on goal and coolly lob the keeper. The confidence came back and Ribble started to wilt, we started to pick holes in their defence and chances came. Rob "iron jaw" Horn strode forward and lashed a drive goalward from 30 yards. Some would say that the keeper was troubled by the effort - but they would be lying. The 4th goal did come from a more conventional source. Yates pressured the defence into conceding a corner and from the corner the smallest player on the pitch again timed it best and Cummins K had nodded his second goal. By now our dominance was total, Monks released Yates and his effort was well saved, Ryan Alston broke into the box but was just denied and Eccles also saw an effort saved at close range. db

Newman College (a) 4 - 2   (ht.2-1)
scorers :  J. Yates 2, S. Horn, A. Butterworth
A historic day in Broughton's recent history as for the first time in many years a Broughton team achieved promotion to a higher Division - but this was no cake walk. On heavy pitch we started the stronger and Newman were rattled into some hasty clearances and wild challenges, but it took 20 minutes before we took the lead and even then it was from a dead ball situation. A long ball from R. Horn caused some chaos in the Newman box and a flailing hand was penalised under slightly controversial circumstances (we agreed with the decision and Newman didn’t !). Either way Yates cooly slotted home the penalty - but seemingly before the ref was ready, so he got to do it all over again and this time put it in the opposite corner. This stung Newman into action and for the rest of the 1st half Newman moved the ball around well and were clearly on top - but with out really threatening too strongly. Rob Horn and Monks stood strong at the back and Ryan Alston and Sean Cummins did what centre mid sometimes has to do in these situations - they just battled and battled. Eventually the pressure told and a difficult swerving shot dipped just in front of Lopko and the ball - slightly spilled - was forced home by a Newman forward. At that point things looked tricky but just before half time - and against the run of play - we regained the lead. Stu Horn launched a Beckam style swerving free kick and followed it up with a celebration worthy of any premiership footballer knowing the cameras were on him. The second half had to improve - and it did - despite a couple of early substitutions. Stu Horn hobbled off and was replaced by Al Alston and Eccles (a little rusty after 6 weeks out) was replaced by Pendelbury (who found that 2 weeks on a foreign beach isnt great preparation for a hard muddy battle next to the Ribble). Eccles did however make a crucial contribution just before coming off. A quick turn and shot left the defence and keeper beaten. The ball rattled off the post, but directly into the path of Butterworth who secured his second vital goal in consecutive games. For a while the game was in the balance but squarely mired in midfield as the pitch deteriorated and legs got tired. Newman pulled a goal back to create a potentially tense last 20 minutes and as the minutes ticked by emotions began to rise - though mainly on the touchline. On the pitch both teams competed hard and fairly. Finally Jamie Yates settled the nerves and swerved in a superb 25m free kick and we could relax a little. Clearly the ref was enjoying himself as the second half lasted 54 minutes by my watch. Just when we thought he was going for a 60 minute half the final whistle finally sent us to the top Division. We need 1 more point to go up as Champions. DB

  GUILDHALL CUP - Quarter Final
Avid followers of Broughton and this column will be aware that going into this weeks fixtures we still harboured a strong expectation of a league and cup double. Well, I have good news and bad. More of the good news later, but possible cup glory is now but a distant memory. True, we started with 4 regulars injured - and another one lasted only 5 minutes before limping out of the game and the season. True also that the pitch, being hard and bumpy, was our least favorite surface. The fact is we had a good team out against a team from a lower Division (actually they were as good a team as we have come across all season). The problem was that the spark of confidence and creation that has burned so brightly all season seemed almost none existant. Management started with a plan that half worked and by the end of the game had reached 'Plan D' in an attempt to kick start the performance. All the players worked hard but with significant effect. We started on a relatively equal footing with neither team really threatening. Broughton relying too much on individual efforts rather than the team work that we normally see. McGill went close from a corner and Sean Cummins had a couple of efforts, one of which was well saved the the keeper and one seriously threatened a passing blackbird, but that was about it. Devonshire had good possession but really didn’t threaten much for the first 35 minutes - apart that is from their centre mid-fielder who had the ability to launch a throw in that would make that guy from Stoke look like a weakling. As a result and thing even partway inside our half inevitably ended up dropping in our 6 yard box. Actually we defended this quite well, but it all added to the jitters. Devonshire went ahead when a great free kick rebounded off a post - directly into the path of a Devonshire forward - and that’s how it stayed for the rest of the half. A bit of a re-organisation at half time lead to our best spell of the game - and for 25 minutes into the 2nd half we looked the most likely to score. Ryan Alston had some joy down the right and Houghton and Zolly had long range efforts, but still we couldn’t fashion a clear opening. The clearly fashioned opening - when it came - fell to the dangerous Devonshire forward and we found ourselves in the unusual position of being 2 down and we really couldnt complain. Changes were made, everybody put in a valiant effort, but nothing really worked and our hopes of a Wembley final trickled away. On a positive note, and we should take huge encouragement from this, the only team who could have caught us dropped league points - and so We are Divison 1 CHAMPIONS. Well done chaps. db

The train came off the rails badly last week so the challenge for today was to re-focus. At least we have something to focus on - the prize of an unbeaten league campaign is still firmly in reach. As last week, the challenge was made harder by injuries and absences – six in total, but boosted by the return of Butler and Alex Alston and the call up of Matt Finney from the 2nd team. Significant efforts went into making sure we were “up for it” and the collective boost that this gave us ensured that we got off to a strong start. Al Butler in particular started off on a high tempo and led from the front, firmly banishing any lingering doubts about his fitness – as the half dozen recipients of clattering challenges dished out in the first 20 minutes will attest. Zolly also exerted a strong influence as we knocked the ball about from one side to the other and generally probed for the first score. It came – as have many others this season- from a dead ball situation as a curling free kick was headed firmly home by Al Butler. The rest of the half was fairly even. We went close a couple of times, Finney seeing an effort well saved, then a great move saw 2 attackers just fail to connect with Finneys driven cross. At the other end a strange and usual period of slack play in our back 4 was just salvaged by a dramatic last ditch goal line clearance by Andy Horn. “That was as good as a goal” I was knowledgably informed by a passing unbiased spectator/proud father. The second half was better. Stu Horns half time words of wisdom were well targeted and clearly taken on board by the boys and we again started to pass short and move people around. Butler had to be replaced after being on the end of a diabolical tackle, and from the resultant free kick it again fell to Jamie Yates to settle our nerves and bend and swerve the ball into the net. It was a fair and just reward for the poor act of foul play. Boardman replaced Butler and Pendlebury replaced R. Alston and with this new burst of energy we mostly dominated the last 25 minutes. Pendlebury and the crowd all thought he had scored after he dived acrobatically to convert a Butterworth cross. In the chaos the Ribble keeper emerged with ball and Stu Horn had a comic moment for his post match vote. The crowd were now in good spirits - a mood lifted considerably by one of the most inept attempts to head a ball seen in recent years at Myerscough. Al Alston foolishly made this attempt in full view of the home crowd and it firmly cemented his position in local folklore. Joking apart, we had to concentrate defensively for the last 10 minutes to see the game out, and when Greg Lopko made a great save from Ribble's last attempt on goal we knew the day was ours. db

There are some days when the football flows, chances are created and pressure exerted. And then there are days when they don’t, and today they really, really, didn’t. It didn’t help that the pitch was rough and it didn’t help that the wind blew directly in our faces for the first 45 minutes, but that only tells half the story. We struggled to put together anything that even remotely resembled any joined up attacks and good players continued to win the ball - then promptly hand it back. Walton settled on a fairly basic game plan. Followers of Stoke or Big Sam in his prime would recognise the set up - essentially they walloped a long ball towards 2 big forwards from almost any angle available. To be fair it was fairly effective and we had to be constantly on our toes no matter what the situation. The only real positive to come from the 1st half was the defensive display - the back 4 of Gilly Monks Horn and Alston were stretched but survived - just. Lopko pulled off a couple of good saves, the bar saved us when it seemed easier to score and Al Alston redeemed his heading credentials (see last weeks report) with a last ditch headed clearance. With the wind behind it should have improved - but didn’t - at least not to start with. We started to give away silly free kicks and we were made to pay when a pinpoint free kick left Lopko for dead. From then, and for the last 30 minutes we started to improve. A more attacking set up helped, but we started to actually pass to each other and at last we did threaten. Eccles broke through and set up Ryan Alston - the effort was well saved. Alston and then Pendlebury and Finney broke behind the Walton defence but just failed to make a killer pass or shot, and as time went by it looked like our unbeaten season was forfeit. Urged on by Management we had a final push and in the 94th minute the ball was turned home by Sean Cummins to rescue a point. I’m not totally sure we deserved it on the day, but we certainly deserve the unbeaten season - and it now just 1 game away. db

Well, I have never been involved with a team who went a league season unbeaten, and before today I didn’t know anybody else who had either. Now, after this fine result, we can all lay claim to have played a part in a bit of history and it really was a great effort. It was fitting that all the players who have been involved were there for the ritual team photo. True some were hobbling (Heywood and Butler) and one serving a ban (Yates) but the tight group that created the success were all present. Pity the setting for the final game wasn’t really from the classic mould. The pitch was poor, the grass long and the weather wet and windy, but after a dodgy 20 minutes we started to defy the conditions and the football started to flow. Key to the performance were Sean Cummins and Ryan Alston and their all action efforts kept the bad guys at bay and our front guys suitable fed with passes to run onto. Pendlebury in particular constantly found his way through the Burscough defence and a slick move involving Pendle, Kev Cummins and Eccles lead to Sean Cummins deadly finish into the bottom corner. That goal was the trigger for our level of play to go up a further level and Butterworth and Ryan Alston both had good efforts before Rob Horn put us 2 goals up. Trouble is that the ref failed to notice that Horns header had crossed the line and bulged the side netting before the keeper scooped it out again- so without goal line technology we went into the with only 1 goal on the scoreboard. The 2nd half – largely played against the wind could have been a problem, but infact the level stayed high. Centre backs Rob Horn and Monks(then replaced by McGill) had to stay sharp against the long ball, but infact Burscough rarely threatened and we set about building the lead. Butterworth extended the lead when he latched onto a defence splitting pass from Ryan Alston and coolly slotted past the keeper and we felt that we could relax. Eccles capped a fine performance and season by outpacing the central defence and using that trusty left foot to find the bottom corner – and that should have been that. Stu Horn capped a return from injury to play the last 20 minutes and it was fitting he did, his contribution to the season has been significant. Burscough did get a late consolation, but it was no more than that and caused no great levels of stress So there we go, dear reader. Another season finished and for the first time for many year without a hard luck story. I hope that you all return with me in August were you will find us in the PREM! db

scorers :  M. Finney
Both teams started the game slow but the strong wind didnt help. Charnock scored the first goal as they whipped in a corner missed by all the defence and a easy tap in at the back post. That woke us up and we instantly replied. A long ball up to Matt Finney put him through and he slotted nicely past the Charnock goalkepper. A few bad defensive errors then saw brought lose a grip in the game. Charnock made it 3-1 at half time.broughton started the secong half strong but where sucker punched on the break by charnock to make it 4-1. Our heads had gone. A silly mistake by the goal kepper Jay Ash led to him fouling the Charnock foward and being sent off. They scored the penalty and this left our shape all over the place. Charnock then became dominant and quickly scored 3 more making it 7-1 full time. CB

We started brightly against AFC Preston and passed the ball arpund with confidence. The dominance paid off when Finney put broughton 1 up. AFC Preston responded quickly and equalised with a soft goal from a free kick. But we didn't let that stop us and played some good football. A cross from Carl Butler was met by the head of Bangi to restore the lead. Then we forged on with more goals from Bangi and Finney to go in 4 -1 up. Second half got scrappy and AFC Preston resorted to nasty tactics. We went doen to 9 men due to injuries and Preston made it count making it 4-2. But we dug deep and had majority of chances. Then a thunderbolt from Iddon made it 5-2 and sealed the game. CB

We started the game strong and went in front when a through ball got to Matt Finney and he slotted home. We kept the pressure on but couldn't get another till near the end of the half when we were rewarded for our pressure when Dan Horton rose at the back post to head in a corner. The second half chipping came at us without creating too many chances. We looked tired though and Chipping got a break through with a speculative lob from 30 yards out. Then near the end of the game they equalised with a sloppy goal from a corner. It woke us up and we hit the bar from a corner and matt finney went through on goal but couldn't find the net. Definitely 2 points dropped. CB

We started really bad and imediatley went 1 nil down. And if it wasn't for a solid performance and a few crucial tackles at the back from Matt Handley it could've been more. Coming up to half time we hit them on the counter and Matt Finney slotted home. Second half we woke up. Played the ball around suberbly and a goal from 35 yards from Micklethwaite and a tap in from Nathan Russell killed the game. Nathan than assisted Aaron with a long ball down the line that he slotted home brilliantly. Then Butler popped up with goal of the game from 40 yards over the goalkeepers head. He was having a nightmare. Finney grabbed his second goal of the game to take his tally to 12 in 7 games and Luka Boccinho finished the scoring of with a thumping drive fron the edge of the box into the top corner. CB

A new look Broughton team took on AFC Preston on a horrible Moor Park pitch. But we started brightly and passed the ball round with confidence but couldn't take our chances. On the 30th minute a shot/cross by Clint Hughes beat the goal keeper and gave us a deserved lead. Then straight after Luka made it 2-0. We saw blood and a smart free kick by Bocchino made it 3-0. Then just before half time a smart turn and curling shot by Butler gave us a 4-0 half time lead. A sluggish start was made in the 2nd half and was followed by a bizzare moment where AFC Preston's goal keeper and centre back got into a scuffle. This led to the goal keeper walking off the pitch. That moment killed the game and made it scrappy. Near the end of the game AFC scored a sloppy consolation. CB

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE MEMORIAL TROPHY - FINAL
- Played at Bamber Bridge FC
Broughtons season hit a further high at the end of a dramatic final that had skill, excitement, farce and niggle in equal measure. Broughton started by far the stronger. Micklethwaite and Hughes had control of midfield for the first 20 minutes and energetic running from Bocchino up front and Butler out wide, posed a continual threat to the Charnock defence. With Turner and Iddon also raiding from full back it seemed inevitable that the pressure would tell - and it did after 10 minutes when a fast break down our right overloaded the Charnock defence. The cross ball narrowly evaded Finney, but Bocchino was on hand to hammer the ball home. Further chances came, but slowly the game evened up as Charnock started to flood midfield and that in turn created space up front. By far the greatest danger came down our left as their no 11 (deservedly the man of the match) started to find space and his pace and control caused problems as defensively Broughton started to look ragged. Eventually, following a couple of close shaves we were exposed once again and Charnock bundled the ball home to equalise. It got worse just before the break when No 11 again broke free and his perfect cross ball dropped at the feet of a Broughton defender at the back post - 1 yard out, facing his own goal and surrounded by opposition forwards ready to pounce. An impossible position to defend and the own goal that followed couldn’t be criticised. The second half started brightly for Broughton as the midfield 2 again exerted influence, but as in the first half, Charnocks movement began to cause more problems. The Broughton defence coped well however. Hamer and the super cool Ade Owens looked tight and the sound handling of Griffith in goal restricted Charnock to some longer range efforts. We were helped by the strange decision to move our friend the no 11 into a central position where he saw more of the ball, but had less room to cause problems. Russell replaced Iddon and the fresh legs seemed to give us more impetus. Bocchino started to find space behind their defence again, Finney started to get on the ball more often, and this created space for Spencer to start to torment the left side of the Charnock defence. From a long angled ball from Russell, Spencer timed his run perfectly and Spencer, the ball and the keeper all met together on the edge of the box. Spencer and the ball were clattered by the keeper (who arrived just a fraction late) and we awaited the refs decision. The keeper stayed on (probably just the right decision) and the penalty was denied, but Micklethwaite ensured that justice was done by bending the free kick just inside the post (2-2). Far from spurring us on it seemed to shake Charnock into life and we spent the next 10 minutes chasing shadows - so when Charnock scored with 15minutes to go the sizeable Broughton support feared the worst. Bangi had already replaced the tiring Butler, and so when, with 10 minutes to go, manager Chris Bury had to replace injured Micklethwaite it was fair to say that the crowds level of optimism wasn’t greatly enhanced. How wrong we were! With time running out and the Charnock bench getting cocky, Spenser sent over the pass of the night towards the back post. Who should we find there but Chris Bury - and his volleyed shot from 10 yards was as good a finish as you will see anywhere - at any level. It was all slightly surreal. This was Bury’s first (and only) touch of the night, but a greater impact you couldn’t ask for. Bury then got booked for celebrating. How ridiculous of the referee to book somebody for celebrating under those circumstances ! The game started to get frenetic and spikey for the last 10 minutes. Charnock seemed much more disturbed by this and their defensive play started to falter. 2 minutes into extra time Finney evaded one defender with his close control and as he broke into the box was floored by a tired challenge to give us a grandstand finish. Spencer remained super cool, the penalty was buried, and hysteria broke out in the stands. db

FC Clayton Brook (a)   4 - 7  (ht.0-4)

It was the first game of the season against a new team, on a new pitch/field with new manager, Jay Adamson, in charge…same old Broughton 3rd team. The late call-off to the 2nd team meant that we recruited a few players late on and this seemed to disrupt our pre-match preparations. That and having to wait for our hosts to leave the only changing room (AKA the local, well-used drug hostel). The referee started the match half our players had made it onto the pitch, before any Broughton player knew the starting team, never mind their positions, formation and tactics. As a result, we were 1-0 down after 20 seconds. We were 2-0 by the time we managed to get correct XI on the pitch and 3-0 down by the time we had everyone in the right position. It could not have been a worse start to the season. We got to the break at 4-0 and that flattered us. A few words were spoken at the interval and changes were made with M.Bowerman & Bocchino came on. Their main threat was their speedy wingers and they continued to cause problems in the second half and we, almost as quickly, found ourselves 6-0 down. We did manage to claw ourselves back into the game as Bocchino and Hughes started to cause them a lot of problems. Bocchino dribbled past half their team before slotting in our first. Hughes got another one back from a strike within the area. Bocchino added a third after showing up their defence again. The locals were becoming restless and a “rock in a sock” incident at the side of the pitch took some of the attention away from the match. Bowerman scored a fourth after rounding their centre-back following a corner. The come-back was on and it was all one-way traffic. Bocchino was fouled in the box with 10 minutes to go and promptly threatened and received a barrage of racist insults for his troubles. Mick “I’ve never missed a penalty” took control of the ball and the chance to make the score 6-5 and give us the chance to get a point, or even a win. However the spot-kick went wide and with it, our momentum. Clayton Brook added a seventh on the break to wrap up the win. MB

Another solid performance at Myerscough from Broughton’s third season saw us pick up another 3 points. We were the better side throughout but both defences were solid and both ‘keepers made good saves when called upon. Ward went close a couple of times before scoring an absolute beauty from the outside of the box which hit the underside of the bar before going in. As Adlington pushed forward for an equaliser we found more and more gaps in their defence and hit the post and the bar as we tried to wrap the match up. Sprake made one brilliant save from a corner but we were comfortable after that. The team is finally starting to look like it could do well in this division. MB

A number of key players were missing this week and we started the match with just 11 players after somebody …Kieran Owens… slept in and never made kick-off. Only 3 of the 11 that started the last match started this match. As a result, the hosts started the stronger side and caused us problems, particularly on the wing with their quick wingers. Sprake made one very good save to keep us in the game but we were 2-0 down at half time with both their goals coming on the break. We didn’t get many clear-cut chances in the first half and we gave the ball away too cheaply. Owens, who was not out of bed, came on for the second half and this allowed Pommy to move into the middle of midfield and it helped turn the match instantly as he formed a solid partnership with Georgie. We started to create chances and limit E&H to very few chances. Our break-through came from an unlikely source as Hesketh scored a screamer from outside of the box. Higgins and Harrington both forced their ‘keeper into good saves. We were getting closer and closer but couldn’t quite get the equaliser. Our best chance came in the last minute as Higgins did well to beat the offside trap, took down the high ball brilliantly but fired over with just the ‘keeper to beat. This is definitely 3 points dropped as we should be beating sides like this but credit to the players that were available because we put in a decent second half performance in difficult circumstances.   In stark contrast to last week, we had 14 players at kick-off and we were even able to turn away a couple of first team players that were nervous they wouldn’t feature in their match because of their large bench. With a couple of players dropping down from the second team, we had good competition for places despite 5 or 6 good third team players being unavailable. For the first time since this writer has been at the club (1999), there are more players than positions – and there is a good amount of quality throughout. It’s almost as if we could do with a fourth team!! Anyway, onto the match. . . The first 30 minutes were completely one-sided at it was just a matter of when we would get the goals as we completely controlled the match. Geordie, Schultz and Pommy completely dominated midfield allowing Ward, Higgins and Ben to get forward and cause their defence problems. Unfortunately we missed a few good chances with Higgins missing the best after a superb cross from Ward. We did eventually get the ball in the net after Ward pulled it back for Pommy to hammer home but the dopey linesman flagged to say the ball had gone out of play before the pass from Ward came in. This seemed to turn the game on its head as we stopped playing football and started getting on the ref's back. The visitors never threatened us but the game became scrappy and our performance disjointed. We regrouped at the break and started to dominate again. Ward was brought down in the box and Higgins coolly slotted home the resulting penalty. Ward should have doubled the advantage minutes later after rounding the ‘keeper on the edge of the area but the shot went high and wide. Higgins then beat two players in the box before being brought down, winning us another penalty. Higgins stepped up and again and hit the same bottom corner to double the advantage. The cigars came out after this and we were almost instantly burnt by them. The defence of Buxton, Cheesy, Owens and Catlow had rarely been troubled in the match but were beaten twice in the space of 5 minutes only for man-mountain, Sprake, to come to the rescue with two brilliant one-on-one saves when it looked certain that the visitors would score. Sprake is starting to look like he’s getting back to his best in recent matches and it’s making a big difference to the team. A couple of substitutions helped us get back on top and we started to take control of the match again. The closest we came to adding a third was from a M.Bowerman header but the ‘keeper made a save similar to that of Craig Gordon v Bolton in December 2010. All-in-all it was a decent win from a good performance. We still need to be a bit more clinical in-front of goal because we won’t get as many chances against the better sides but this team should start climbing this table because we've got some good players and plenty of competition for places.   We came into this game after a good team performance in last week’s game against the league leaders and with a positive attitude. From the whistle we raced into the game creating many chances which resulted in their 12th, 13th and 14th man giving them a helping hand! Both post’s and the bar!! Was this going to be one of those games! We continued to press and finally got the breakthrough that we deserved after a decent passing move which resulted in Chris Higgins slotting the ball under the keeper 1-0. We continued to create more chances but failed to capitalise with International not causing us many problems at the back. The second half started slow for us but we soon got back into gear with a great ball down the line by Leaver (I’m sure he had his eye’s shut!!) Higgins raced onto it and cut into the box only for their centre half to create a scene out of a Bruce Lee movie! PENALTY! Higgins picked his spot and slotted home 2-0. At this point we were cruising and pushing for another but it didn’t come, then Leaver decided to create his own scene from a martial arts movie and brought down their on-rushing left back which resulted in a free kick about 35 yards out and their player rolling around liked he’d been shot from row Z and was carried off. From the free kick the ball was played down the line for their winger to somehow score from the by-line coming straight across the area and in off the far post!! 2-1. For some strange reason we now decided not play like we had for the last 65 mins! They started to push for an equaliser but the defence stood strong and we saw the game out. ANOTHER GREAT TEAM PERFORMANE BY EVERYONE and let’s keep this form up 10 pts from the last 4 games! - Pom

Going into this game against bottom of the league on the back of some very good results and team performances we knew another 3 points here and we were going in the right direction! That complacency showed in the first 10 minutes as we we're loose with possession and sloppy in the final third. The breakthrough came when a sloppy goal kick from the opposition was nodded through by Higgins for Balch who calmly shot home. Soon after a smart move was finished when Ward slotted our second, we had settled in to our game by now with a string of promising moves. Tom Daley would be proud of our very own Ward with his theatrics in the box earned us a penalty which was stroked home by Higgins. 3-0 at half time and almost a certain 3 points. We conceded a sloppy goal early on in the second as a defensive corner wasn't dealt with only for Andy to chase their 'floating' player away from goal only for him to turn round and chip it back into the top corner.. CLEAN SHEET GONE! We regained composure and pushed forward again with Balch making the most of a poor Chorley defence to grab his second. With some changes brought us a different dimension with 10 1st team lads all stripped and raring for a game, good work down the left ended with a ball stood up at the back post for Higgins to grab his second. The race was on now for who would get the hat-trick first in the battle of the front 2 but the goal that brought it is credit to all involved as a defensive corner brought a counter attack where Balch fed Ward down the left who pulled it across for Higgins to slide in for his 2nd hat-trick of the season. There was still time for some drama as Balch chased one of his own only for the keeper to produce his only 2 saves of the game to deny him and with Jay making a cameo performance he had everyone on the sideline urging his diving header home only for the keeper to spoil the party. Another good 3 points and a great team performance once again. CH

Coming into the return leg of this fixture where we were victorious previously we knew it would be a tough game, non more so than Schultz who may have been looking for some revenge after being knocked out by a 15 year old away in Wigan. We started brightly and took control of the game early on with some solid defending and tireless work rate, we lost 2 players early on with Hubbers and Rob going off with hamstring and ankle injuries. We took the lead with a lovely swooping move from back to front in seconds that left Balch and Higgins 2 v 1, Balch slipped in Higgins who slotted first time from the edge of the box. From that moment chances came few and far between, the game was broken up a tremendous amount by their liner who was 'flag happy' throughout to say the least. We had the ball in the net before half time with Ward finding Higgins for that combination again only for the liner to yet again have the final say. 1-0 up at half time in a tight game with the opposition having a mixture of 1st team players dotted within their team that only strengthened them, they had chances throughout and non greater than a spot kick conceded in a mirror of last weeks antics this week chasing him resulted in a hand in the back.. PENALTY! Andy was up and positive straight away as the lads protested and boy did he make up for it, great save down to his left and up sharply to ensure the striker didn't have enough time to think about his follow up! We had 1 or 2 good moments again in the game with some great work from every player but we eventually caved in when the ball went out left and their winger had time and space to squeeze 1 in from the edge of the area at the near post, so with the game level it was looking likely to be honours even but a sloppy goal kick and some hesitant decision making left their striker with a 2 yard tap in, 1-2. There was still time left for their liner to yet again have a say with some pressing attacking from the boys ended with the ball being played square and Higgins slotting home what looked like was an equaliser but yet again the flag was up, dubious decisions were the talking point this week non less than the one from the referee who decided to award a foul on Balch who was bearing down in on the keeper only to be taken down and not even book the player and also his decision to not award a penalty when Ward was what can only be described as wrestled away from the ball by their less than mobile goal keeper. All in all a poor performance but plenty of positives to carry in to next week and build upon!. CH

SYNDICATE TRUST YOUTH CUP - Round 1
The game started with both teams working hard to cancel each other out. Broughton looking good when trying to get their passing game together. Disaster struck when a hopeful ball was mis-controlled and the right winger put in a cross which was well finished for 1.0. 15 mins. Dan Topping went close with a shot just over and later with a header well saved after good approach play by Joe Cook. Matt Peart and Lewis T. Jay then had shot blocked and a long ball found the striker and G. Wylie did well to push round the post. From the resulting corner the ball was struck home from just inside the box for 2.0 43mins.
The 2nd half started after instruction to get tighter and put more pressure on the Thornton defence but again a little sloppy in defence and we were 3.0 down 50 mins. Their left winger was getting too much space down the right and scored 1 and made another for 5.0 75mins. A harsh penalty rounded off the scoring for Thornton. However we scored a cracking headed goal from Vaughan after a great cross from Joe Cook. Will nearly scored again as we at last started to play but the keeper saved well. We were then denied a penalty which would have at least given us some crumb of comfort after a disappointing performance after an excellent pre season. Must and can do better. Stand out performances from Joe Cook, keeper Geoff Wylie and man of match Lewis Tannock but need the whole squad to be up for it to compete in this tough league and stand up to intimidation and strong arm tatics! AFC Blackpool (h)  0 - 5  (ht.0-2)
scorers :  -
The lads came up against last years league winners and a team complete of 18 year olds. The game started and without any recognised centre halves and we nearly came unstuck after 2 mins with a bit of hesitancy from a long goal kick. We then started to play well and Tom H was beginning to pull the strings in centre midfield and shaved the post with a 30 yarder. Jay S then was put through by debutant striker Samson but the keeper made a good save. After 30 mins and coming under a bit of pressure a routine clearance from the back hit an AFC Blackpool player on the back and ball ran straight to the AFC striker who finished well. Tom H was unfortunately withdrawn with injury and 2 mins later whilst the midfield was still adjusting AFC scored from 30 yards top corner after not being closed down. Half time 0.2 We started the 2nd half and again a little sloppiness caused to go 3.0 down 50mins,with a pass going astray and losing possession in an dangerous area. We still tried to play our passing game but couldn't really create against a well drilled physical side. Samson was played in after some good passing from Matt P and Lewis T his shot flashed across the face of goal deflected onto the post and out for a corner which just summed up our day! AFC then twice hit us on the break with our lads tiring to go 5.0 up, Lewis T then applied a fantastic finish from a great ball by Samson but was harshly adjudged offide with what would of been a deserved consolation for his and the teams hard graft. Credit to AFC Blackpool who played the game the right way and were more then sporting in their victory. 5.0 slightly flattered them but our lads need to stick to the game plan! - LT.

Lytham St. Annes YMCA (a)  2 - 3  (ht.0-2)

Another trip up the M55, with the lads hoping to turn decent displays into a positive result. A change in formation and Jack R playing his 1st game of the season at centre half with Tom W hopes were high. We looked very solid and again the better side in the 1st 25 mins with all the team working hard and putting in a shift again against older opponents. Lewis T did well to beat his man and instead of shooting tried to play in Andy C who was just tackled as about to shoot. YMCA broke down the right and a ball across was well saved by Geoff but the loose ball landed at the strikers feet who made no mistake from 3 yards. The wind was taken out of our sails and YMCA really tested our defence as they grew into the game, keeper Geoff and the defence held firm until a mis control from our goal-kick let the striker in again, and he made no mistake with an excellent finish. A little lack of concentration was costing us when we had worked really hard in the 1st half. 2.0 YMCA At half time we asked the lads to be more positive play the channels and get the heads up. The half began and we really began to play Matt W played to Matt P who exchanged one twos with Andy C who crossed a great ball over for Lewis T to smash in from 5 yards! Game on! We then forced a couple of corners and free kicks in dangerous areas but the YMCA defence stood firm and we were always susceptible to the counter attack and this cost us the 3rd goal when a poor pass when in possession opened our right flank up and the dangerous left winger put in a great cross for 3.1. The lads responded well and within 2 mins reduced the score to 3.2 with a quite fantastic finish from Jay Smith from 20 yards after good pressing from Tom H and Joe C in midfield. We had couple of scares as we looked to try and force a draw but Geoff was having a blinder in goals aided by Jack and Tom W. Final score 3.2 YMCA but the lads can be very proud of their performances today and we are confident that in this tough league we can start to take some points. Well done to all the players today I think we have turned a massive corner! Great individual performances from Big Daz, Jack, Tom W, Matt W and Lewis T but the whole team should take confidence in their attitude and desire today. LT

Penwortham (h)  2 - 2  (ht.0-1)

We entertained Penwortham – another side full of nearly 18 year olds. For the 1st 20 minutes Penwortham were on fire and attack after attack came at our defence which stood firm, with Tom W and Daz C really battling hard, winning tackles and headers. Alex and Matt W at full back were sticking to the their tasks and repelling the threat down the wings. Ever reliant Geoff had a few saves to make and was marshalling the back four brilliantly. Just when we started to get back into the game, we conceded a corner and the right back of Penwortham sprinted round to the back door without being tracked and scored a fine header from an acute angle. 0-1 Penwortham! The lads began to start playing and began to match the physicality of the opposition, with a few tasty tackles coming in from both sides. We adjusted the formation and began to compete in the strong midfield battle. Daz C took a long throw and Tom H headed on Lewis T steaming in just couldn’t adjust his body shape and his header glanced the upright with the keeper beaten, Joe C had a shot over and Tom H hit one wide. Tackles were flying in now and Alex at right back was taken off after 2 late tackles injured him. Dan T went up for a header and an American football type challenge about 5 mins late meant he had to be withdrawn with concussion. Half time 0-1. The lads at half time knew they could do better and went into the 2nd half with confidence. The game was even for around 15 mins with Penwortham creating the better chances but all the BAY.FC giving their all to the task. Andy C down the left put in cracking cross after neat work by the impressive Liam S but Lewis T was inches from making contact. Samson was working hard upfront and we began pressing the ball in all areas of the pitch and forcing mistakes from the Pen FC players. We were on the attack but a long punt upfield over the defence caught Daz out he tried to head back but the excellent No.4 from Penwortham latched on and pushed the ball past Geoff for 0-2 to Pen FC after 70 mins. The lads didn’t deserve that and carried on playing some great football, a great cross from Joe C saw the keeper totally misjudge and the ball fell through his hands but nobody was there to capitalize. Matt W played into Lewis he put a great channel ball through to the excellent Tom H, he skinned his man at the byline and chipped expertly to the onrushing Andy C who finished from 8 yards with a great header 1-2. Game on, we were now in the ascendency and started to attack them at every opportunity. Tom Casey was proving a real handful upfront winning headers and having 2 shots saved. A free kick was awarded just before the halfway line, Samson smashed a great ball in and Andy C scored with an exquisite outside of the left foot half volley into the top right corner of the bag! One final attack Lewis T put in Samson whose shot from 10 yards was excellently saved Andy C was onto the rebound but it was cleared off the line. Corner and Marcus who had an excellent 2nd half was inches from connecting. Full time 2-2. An excellent game against a powerful side the lads never gave up and fully deserved their point, hopefully 1st win is just round the corner, but we need to start from the 1st whistle not the 2nd half! Well done to all you showed great pride and determination. LT

The game started and Leyland put us under some early pressure and Will V in goals made a fantastic save low down to his right hand post. BTR then forced a corner and Jack R did well to clear. Broughton started to get into the game and new signing Ryan W was marshalling the defence well. We began to start attacking down with great 1 touch football down the right through Alex R and Lewis T and Andy C finished a great move off by placing a sweet shot past the keeper. 1-0 Broughton. The pitch was beginning to get heavy but we were now imposing our style on the game and from a superb ball in by Ryan W, Dan T looped a header over the keeper 2.0 Broughton. BTR nearly pulled one back but put the ball over from a good position. From the goal kick a great move down the left involving Liam S and Daz C saw Andy C through on goal and he again expertly finished for 3.0 Broughton half time. The 2nd half began and, on a tricky pitch, we began to play some great 1 touch football and should have added to the score line. Marcus had a goal disallowed after Lewis T was harshly adjudged to have committed a foul on the keeper. The best passage of play in the game saw a fantastic passing move from left to right and a one to two with Andy C saw Dan T time his run to perfection and slot home only for the move to have been too good for the linesman who flagged it offside. BTR had a chance but ex player Corey Brooks was unable to get past Will V when one on one. Broughton should have scored a few more goals but a combination of excellent defending and goalkeeping from BTR kept the score line down after a totally dominant 2nd half from the Broughton lads. Good win for the lads today and debutant Ryan Walsh had a great game and took Man of the Match.

Poulton (a)  1 - 0  (ht.0-0)
scorers :  T. Hampson
We travelled to Poulton FC looking to continue our recent good form. With a few players missing through injury and work commitments the depth of the squad would be tested. The game started and Broughton found themselves playing against the strong wind. The lads worked hard and defended well with Will in goals only being tested once but was assured with his handling and kicking. We didn’t really create to many chances choosing to try and keep possession and winning the 1st and 2nd ball which the defence and midfield did admirably with Marcus winning most duels in the air. A great move involving Connor, Marcus and Dan saw Tom smash a shot just over from the edge of the box. Just before half time Poulton broke down their right and a great strike from the right winger looked like it had beaten Will but bounced just inches wide, Centre half Tom W had to withdraw from the game and a defensive re shuffle with Liam expertly slotting into left Centre back . Half time 0-0. We now had the wind and began to attack well with some great one touch passing and movement, great inter play from Tom and Lewis saw Jay put through on goal and the keeper saved well. Joe C put a great ball in Dan laid off to Lewis who hit a great shot that skimmed the bar. Jay and Tom were linking well upfront and when Jay was put through the keeps came bombing off his line and miscued his clearance to Tom H who controlled and shot to goal but the keeps recovered to pull off a great save. We began to really take the game by the scruff of the neck but had to be wary of the dangerous counter attack and Will made a brilliant punching save from a cross when Poulton were queuing up to score. Joe C took a great free kick in after Alex had been up ended and Lewis adjusted to loop a header inches wide with the goalie beaten. Marcus was inches from connecting with a diving header and Tom was just from an acute angle. It looked like it wasn’t going to be our day and with time running out either side had an equal chance to win a very entertaining game played in a competitive but sporting manner. Finally our chance came great pass and move through midfield saw the ball played to Jay who unselfishly squared to Tom H who smashed the ball into the right corner for 1.0 Broughton! We played out the last 5 minutes with great match management and control repelling anything Poulton could throw at us. A great performance from the lads but both teams played their part in what the referee said was one of the most enjoyable games he has reffed this season so credit to both teams. Hard to pick a MOM from a fantastic squad performance but Marcus B had his best game of the season in centre defensive midfield so just shaded it from a number of others. LT
